William was educated at Prince of Wales College and the University of Edinburgh. He entered the India Medical Service in 1866 and during his career in India he served as Medical Officer to the Maharajah of Kaipuerthla, Inspector-General of Civil Hospitals and Honorary Surgeon to the Viceroy of India,
In 1898, he was made a Companion of the Star of India by Her late Majesty Queen Victoria. who personally conferred the insignia of that Order upon him at Balmoral.
After retirement from the Indian Medical Service in 1899 he assumed the position of Superintendent of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
